Day 113: 365 excursion

Can’t be the best everyday…but you can be your best. It’s been a tough week after another injection and not being able to work out like I want is frustrating but patience is a virtue.

Day 113 was an adventure. Matt Edgar and myself went down to Newport Beach, a little area where Matt works about 15 minutes south of Long Beach to check out the beach scene.

We got a good upper body workout in at the beach using the high bars, rings, balance bars, and poles. Tricep dips, pushups, pull ups, chin ups, one handers, anything that didn’t aggravate my injured area. I haven’t done a pull up in a very long time so I felt that workout for the next few days. Literally couldn’t straighten my arms. James Sunderland was with us another time (pictured) at the bar place in Santa Monica. Good workout. Great company. Have an awesome Saturday workout. Day 111

Due to traveling circumstances and meetings all day, Thursday Team Leader Tim Rahauser asked me to cover his post for today. But because of his stud status and the true dedication that he has to this organization, he woke up early and got a good run in right outside the Zoo in Washington, DC. He sent me this picture to show his route.

Good Work Tim. That’s what this is all about. Getting the workout in even when your day or mind would suggest otherwise. Day 111 of the challenge.

In other news, The WAO365 Challenge will be implementing some changes. Start thinking about what team you want to join but in the meantime, order you shirts on the WAO homepage now.

Day 106

For Day 106, I went to the gym that is next to the Santa Monica beach and did some balance, core and upper body work.

This past week I was in Portland, OR and Ft. Lewis in Washington. I was visiting friends, helping a family pack up for an east coast move and getting some other opinions on potential running clubs. All while rocking my new dri fit and getting my side planks on.

I was able to workout a few times on the Army base. It was quite astonishing to see the amount of military personnel that would also find the time to work out for an hour or so at the gym on top of their daily sacrifices. It was a little weird at times working out next to guys on an elliptical or spin bike wearing their gas masks in order to make the breathing harder and the workout more challenging. Very inspiring as well as something very new for me.

Other than the weather basically being the complete opposite of what I have been used to in LA, it was an awesome trip. Here’s 2nd Lieutenant Greg Leak and myself after a morning PT session.

For the next month or so I have a great workout partner, Matt Edgar and am excited that he is dedicated to the We Are One 365 movement as well. As I slowly make my recovery back to full time training and running, it will be nice to have a good friend to help motivate me along the way.

Day 99: Portland and Puget

Sorry its a late post but today was a travel day. I flew up to Portland to visit with a friend from college (who runs for a track club in Washington and is in the Army). Also helping a family friend move back to the greatest state ever (New Hampshire for those of you who weren’t quite sure). So while he was doing his workout on the track, I somehow managed to convince the front desk manager of the student gym at the University of Puget Sound that I was a student and  forgot my ID. Really needed to workout. So I got an hour of strength training drills for my torn abdominal tendon as well as 50 minutes of spinning and elliptical. And a little bit of leg lifting circuit before they found out that I wasn’t actually a student. Solid 2 hours. Have a bunch of pictures in my new dri fit shirt with my 2nd Lieutenant friend but don’t have the cord to connect the camera….so next Saturday will be a field day with pictures. Hope you all had a simple saturday workout.

Day 94

Derek Eby, the Team Leader for Mondays is getting over a 24-hour flu. Didn’t want his debut WAO365 blog to be less than stellar so I told him I would cover for him today. I did 30 minutes of leg exercises with bands and balls with a few ab drills. 40 minutes of spinning followed by a stretch session in the sauna with a few laps of swimming afterwards. Then went on a 20 mile bike ride in the afternoon where, once again, I got a flat tire and had to walk home (at least I was on my way back this time). I’m 0-2 now. I want to think that its a sign but I can’t think of any positives.

Another bike ride. Another flat tire. Another longer than planned for workout. Still a good one though.

Get ready for the Granite Girls tomorrow!

Day 93

Leg lifting workout at the gym with spinning and erging for cardio. Got some weird looks for  carrying around a 10 lb weight to keep upper body engaged during leg workout but whatever…got my swell on.

Speaking of looking swell, Sundays will be led by Mike Kirby (pictured left) and Drew Vogt straight out of  Baltimore. Very well rounded guys that will be adding some fun group activities to the blog.

Day 92:

I went to the Westwood Recreation center and did a 35 min slow aqua jogging session with a teammate from the SMTC. Some dynamic stretching and groin strength exercises as well.

Team Saturdays will be lead by yours truly. We want to spread the WAO365 Challenge team as much as possible so if anyone has an interest in taking Saturday, I would be more than willing to set that up. For now, I will be blogging about my workouts on saturday.

Day 91

Day 91 of the 365 Day Challenge was completed by a 45 minutes bike ride into Santa Monica. After finding out about a muscle tendon tear and calcium deposits in the groin area, I now have some information to start my recovery and rehabilitation back into the running world.

Fridays are the day of the week that separates the proverbial boys from men. After a long week of work, school, daily problems or all three, nothing jumpstarts the body like a good workout before enjoying yourself for the weekend. That’s why the Friday Team duo could possibly be one of my favorites. Emily Chiappetta, hailing from Racine, Wisconsin and a recent transfer to Minneapolis, Minnesota, is not a stranger to half or full marathons. Full of energy, fun, and creativity, the WAO365 Team is excited to hear all about Emily’s athletic endeavors.

The other half of the Friday team is the one and only Maxim Wilwerth. Based in NH currently at Plymouth State University, from hockey to soccer to just a very active slifestyle in general, we know that Max’s blog will give us all a good time.  Congrats to his recent Pond Hockey tournament win.

Day 90

I worked out at the International Sports Institute where a good portion of my physical therapy is being done for my groin. Hour long core session isolating and targeting weak muscle components.

The team leader for Thursdays is going to be lead by Dickinson ’11 grad Tim Rahauser. As a Varsity soccer player and sharp shooter for the intramural basketball league, this guy can cover a lot of athletic ground. Should be nice to get some workouts detailed from Ohio.
