This coming weekend is our Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Sprints League Championship in Worcester, MA. We have been doing tune-up rows this entire in preparation and the whole boat is getting ready for Sunday.

Day 165

Coming off of a great weekend here in Ithaca (as Nick posted about) with the Carnegie Cup races against Yale and Princeton, we have been back on the water even though we were surprised on Monday with a few inches of snow. Today we did a new workout which was 17 strokes “on” or at race-pace, then 5 strokes “off” or paddling. We repeated this sequence for 2500 meters.

Once we came off the water, our “Wall of Honor” recipients were announced. The “Wall” is a giant board in the Varsity Lifting Center on campus that has every varsity sport listed with its honorees last name’s. The categories we are judged/scored on are:

1) Maximum Back Squat

2) Maximum Power Clean

3) Vertical Jump

4) 2000 m Erg Test Score

5) 500 m Erg Test Score

6) Body Fat Percentage

Starting in August, the competition for getting your name on the “Wall” runs throughout the entire Fall, Winter and Spring.

It was a fun practice and I had everyone huddle up afterwards for a team picture:

Day 158

We are currently in the middle of our racing season on the water but I thought that a 2k test on the erg couldn’t hurt, so one of my teammates and I sat down to do one before practice. Below is the video of the final 1:30 or so. My form is not at all stellar but in my defense, it is the last 350 meters of a 2k and it has been weeks since we’ve done any 2k prep…regardless, congratulations to Nathaniel, my teammate, who ended up pulling a personal best.

Day 152

Moving even deeper into our spring racing season, we were down in Washington, D.C. this past weekend for the George Washington University Invitational.

The course is right next to Georgetown, on the Potomac:

I was lucky enough to have an incredible fan section:

We raced Georgetown in our first race and just beat them over the 2k course with a time of 5:35. In the afternoon, we raced UCSD and were able to improve our time to 5:30. Hope you all are enjoying the week and getting in some good workouts.

Day 145

This past weekend, we headed out to San Diego to race in the San Diego Crew Classic.

Not a whole lot to say about the racing other than it was great to see some of our main competition early in the season.

We were interviewed by ESPN U…

Got to row on the West Coast…

And even WAO’s very own Nick Karwoski showed up to help out…

Great to see Nick for the weekend and can’t wait for more races this spring.

Day 138

Today was our final practice in Ithaca before we fly to San Diego for our first races of the season. We did some practice starts, a few race-pace pieces in preparation for the upcoming weekend. Nick is going to drive down from L.A. to spend a few days with me and the team and I’m pretty pumped to get to hang out with him.

In non-rowing related athletics, I was lucky enough to go to the Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament games in Boston last week with my Dad, sister (Granite Girl Lauren) and her husband Lil’ Timmy.

More to come next week-

Day 133

Happy Spring!
What a beautiful Friday! And for any Lakes Region-er like myself, it was a bit sweeter when they declared ice-out on Lake Winnipesaukee. I know that will make Tuesday’s #granitegirls excited. (can we hashtag?)
Since I’m spring break and it’s been so beautiful I’ve done everything possible outdoors. Today I went for a quick hike up Rattlesnake Mountain, Rattlesnake is less than a mile, but the view is insane. If I wasn’t such a guy, I would’ve taken a picture with my WAO dry-fit on, but I don’t think of those things. It was nice to enjoy the nice weather so early in the season, I hope to continue to get some more hikes in, pictures and all.
Hope you senjoyed some nice weather,
Team Friday.
